Introduction Remarks

The head of the Kkobe, Omutaka Nnamwama, is the final link between the Kkobe clan and the King of Buganda (Ssaabasajja Kabaka). The individual clan member must belong to, and communicate to Nnamwama through, a hierarchical system beginning with Enju (household), followed by Oluggya, Olunyiriri, Mutuba, and finally, Ssiga. Subsequent parts of this site and included links will elaborate on these different levels of clan organization.

Kkobe is a yam that creeps up other plants; it bears edible fruits similar to small yam root tubers. The Kkobe fruits can be stored for up to six months without spoiling and is therefore a useful plant for ensuring food security. There are two varieties of the Kkobe plant; Nakatudde bears large fruits while Nakakaawa has smaller bitter fruits, as testified by members of other clans that can eat Kkobe fruit. Kkobe fruits are clan totems; it is a taboo for Kkobe clan members to eat Kkobe.
